7 Must-Do Spring Cleaning Tasks For Your Garden

Squarepegs Handyman 7 Spring Cleaning Tasks For Garden

You might have neglected the yard a bit during the cold winter, but now is the perfect time to get back into the swing of things with your garden. The weather’s getting warmer, the plants are about to grow and bloom, and we’re sure you’ll be wanting to invite friends and family around for a barbecue or two.

Here are our top 7 spring yard maintenance tips to get your yard in tip-top shape and keep it looking lush and beautiful.

SPRING CLEANING FOR YOUR YARD

DECKING AND PERGOLA

Soak up some rays on a new deck or pergola! With a new deck, you can create the ultimate outdoor space, perfect for barbecues, entertaining guests and days spent lounging by the pool.

If you’re thinking about building a deck or pergola, now’s the time, before the weather gets too hot!

If you already have a deck or pergola, it’s time to dust off those cobwebs, give the deck a thorough clean and a new coat of sealant to keep that beautiful timber protected.

TRIM THE TREES

Now that the harsh winter is over, it’s time to give your trees a bit of love. To help your greenery grow and flourish all spring remove any dead or diseased strands, trim back the foliage and tidy up all low hanging-branches.

Pests and creepy-crawlies like to hide out in trees and shrubs in the garden. Don’t give them an invitation to come inside your home, make sure any plants next to windows and doors are trimmed back to a safe distance.

FENCING

Fencing around your home means you can safely enjoy the outdoors, particularly for those with pets or small children. If you have a pool, you’re legally required to install fences that adhere to local government regulations.

If you need to install a new fence, there’s plenty of options out there, depending on your requirements and aesthetic preferences. Colorbond, timber, brick, aluminium and glass are some of the most popular choices.

Cleaning the fence is something that most people forget to do, but it’s an important task to do to keep your yard looking tidy. Use a high-pressure hose to remove dirt, cobwebs and debris.

GET INTO THE GARDEN

Late September and early October are the perfect time of year to get planting! Before you start your new garden, get rid of any weeds and prune back your existing plants.

Then choose what plants you want to go in your garden. Find out what flowers will flourish, depending on the amount of space you have, the weather conditions and level of sun exposure. After you finish planting, don’t forget to fertilise with compost and put some mulch to lock moisture in.

CLEAR THE GUTTERS

As the weather heats up and foliage becomes drier the threat of bushfires increases. One of the best ways you can mitigate bushfire risk to your home is to clean out your gutters.

Remove build-up of leaves and debris and install certified gutter guards. Metal gutter guards block leaves and debris from getting stuck in the gutters, only allowing rain to fall through. They also prevent against embers – gutter guards cannot catch alight so any embers will eventually just burn themselves out.

LAWN CARE

Now that winter is over, your lawn will start growing rapidly again. To encourage new growth, start by aerating the turf. This might sound fancy, but all you really need to do is punch holes in your lawn so air can reach the roots and encourage new growth.

Once your lawn has been aerated, use a natural fertiliser to give it plenty of nutrients, helping it to grow healthy all summer long. Look for any bald patches of grass and refill it for a nice even and green appearance.

EXTERIOR PAINTING

Now’s the time to touch-up that cracking, chipping paint outside. Hopefully, you’ll have some leftover paint stored away somewhere in the garage. If not, don’t stress! You can take a chip of paint to your local paint store and ask them to match it for you.

If you’re just touching up a small area, dab the paint onto the touch-up area and work outwards until you slightly overlap the good paint. If you’re doing a larger area, use a dry paint roller and roll briskly over the area to add texture to the paint.

Want to spruce up your outdoor space on a low budget? Painting your home with a fresh new colour can instantly transform your space. Add a few decorative pillows in a similar colour and your good to go!
