Artificial Lawn Maintenance Guide

Squarepegs Handyman Artificial Turf Maintenance Guide

Many of our clients decide to replace their grass with artificial turf to avoid mowing, edging, fertilising, and all of the other less-than-fun maintenance grass needs. While it is true that artificial turf requires much less work and maintenance than grass, to keep your fake grass looking great and to extend its longevity, there are some maintenance tasks you need to undertake.

In this article, we share all of the maintenance tips you need to keep your artificial lawn looking great.

Artificial Turf Maintenance Guide

Getting Rid of Weeds in Your Artificial Turf

While artificial grass doesn’t grow weeds as easily as real grass, it is still susceptible to weeds. At the first sign of weeds poking through your artificial turf, it is time to pull out the weed spray and spray your lawn.

While many might worry about spraying weeds, rather than pulling them, it is a more effective solution for artificial turf as pulling weeds up by the roots, through the turf, is virtually impossible. Additionally, having the turf acts as a bit of a barrier so the weed spray is less-likely to seep into the underlying soil.

Cleaning Stains from Your Artificial Turf

The downside of artificial turf is that there is a worry spills and stains may become permanent as, unlike real grass, artificial turf does not grow, or absorb what is spilt on it.

Depending upon the severity of the stain, simply spraying it down with some water might do. For more stubborn stains, like cooking oil, crayons, or something else oily or sticky, mineral spirits or aerosol refrigerants might be necessary to remove the stain from your turf.

Removing Pet Waste from Your Artificial Turf

Many of our clients who opt for artificial turf do so because they have pets who do their toileting on the grass. Pet waste has a harmful impact on real grass, so fake grass is a great alternative for our clients with dogs.

Fortunately, removing pet waste from your lawn is easy.

The first step is to let all solid waste dry before removing. Once clearing your artificial lawn of solid pet waste, cleaning the turf is as simple as hosing the area down.

To remove persistent odours, we recommend our favourite, local, Australian pet odour enzyme spray, PetLab.

Regular Cross Brushing of Your Artificial Turf

Well maintained, and properly installed artificial grass can last 15 - 25 years. In addition to regular cleaning, cross brushing your artificial turf is important to its maintenance and upkeep.

Cross brushing simply refers to using a rake, or similar tool, to brush the grass fibres in the opposite direction they are laying. Regular cross brushing keeps artificial turf from looking flattened and crushed.

Rinse Your Artificial Turf Regularly

Even if there is not visible dirt or debris, spraying your artificial lawn down one a regular basis will go a long way towards the longevity of your artificial lawn. We recommend hosing down your fake grass once each fortnight when there are no water restrictions in your area.
