Handyman Projects to Complete This July

Squarepegs Handyman Projects to Complete In July

It is hard to believe we are already halfway through July, yet here we are!

For Australians, July means winter. If you are located near us here in Maitland, July also means rain, floods and the like.

While most of us are not new to Australian winters, and the rain that sometimes comes along with it, what you might not be aware of, are some of the projects around your home that need to be done around your home this month.

In this article, we share some handyman projects to tackle around your home this July.

July is the perfect time to tackle these handyman projects

INSULATION

When we first moved into our current home, we had a leak in our roof. When we went up into our roof to see what was going on, we discovered all of the insulation in our roof was still in the bags it was shipped in, and was all piled up in one spot. The insulation was never installed!

This isn’t a unique experience. Many of our clients have had the same, or similar experiences with poorly installed insulation.

Now that winter is well and truly upon us, it’s a good time to ensure your home is properly insulated.

TEND TO DRAFTS AND LEAKS

Here is New South Wales, we are in the midst of the wettest year on record. With all the moisture, you might be noticing drafts and leaks around windows and doors.

Repairing seals and caulking is important to keep your home weather proof.

WINTERISE OUTDOOR IRRIGATION

Many of us have automated outdoor irrigation systems. Now that winter is here, your lawn and garden are losing less moisture to evaporation, so need to be watered less.

Additionally, with all this wet weather and flooding, your garden is getting more than enough water.

To ensure your lawn and garden are not getting overwatered, it’s important to remember to adjust the timing of your automated irrigation, or to shut it off all together.

GUTTER CLEANING

Throughout the autumn months, our gutters are subjected to fallen leaves and debris. Staying on top of gutter cleaning is important to avoid clogs.

When your gutters are clogged, water will not properly divert from your home and will spill over your gutters. This could lead to a number of issues including leaks, flooding, mould and even structural issues.

If you haven’t cleaned your gutters recently, it is a good idea to take the opportunity the rare sunny day provides to ensure your gutters are clear - especially with more rain forecasted.

TRIM TREES

Trimming your trees and hedges in the winter might not seem like a pressing task on your winter to-do list.

Winter is actually an opportune time to trim and prune as there is less mess when trees are bare, and it is easier to see where cuts and trims need to be made. Weak branches can be removed to ensure they do not blow off in strong winds and weather. This will avoid safety hazards.

INDOOR PROJECTS

The cold, rainy weather is likely keeping you and your family indoors more than usual. Now that you are indoors, you’re probably starting to notice some of the small, fiddly projects that need doing around your home.

Winter is the perfect time to tend to leaky taps, small tiling projects, paint touch-ups, and more.
