Horticulture is a passion here at Squarepegs and we put this passion to work for Squarepegs Handyman’s clients.

Since arriving in Newcastle years ago, we has worked tirelessly to create and maintain a lush and thriving garden at our own home and we work just as tirelessly for Squarepegs Handyman’s lovely clients to meet all of the gardening and landscaping needs.

So, what are some of Squarepegs Handyman’s top gardening secrets? We share them below.

5 TOP GARDENING TIPS FOR NEWCASTLE

WATER AFTER SUNSET

With current water restrictions in the Hunter, handheld hoses can only be used before 10AM and after 4PM.

As the heat of the day is well and truly stressing your garden long before 10AM and later into the afternoon, it’s a good idea to enjoy the cool of the evening and spend some time giving your plants a good soak after sunset.

Watering after sunset will allow time for the water to be absorbed into the ground rather than evaporating quickly.

MULCH, MULCH AND MORE MULCH

We’ll say it again - mulch.

You don’t have to choose an expensive variety of mulch. The natural fall of leaves, twigs and grass clippings in your garden can be combined with sugar cane mulch to provide an effective barrier to evaporation.

Although not as long lasting as pine bark or hardwood chip, the advantage of sugar cane mulch is that clean compressed mini bales that are easy to transport and readily available at most garden centres and hardware stores.

To find out how much mulch you will need, calculate your requirements based on creating a cover at least 50mm deep - 100ml is preferable.

WATCH OUT FOR SIGNS OF STRESS

If your shrubs are showing signs of wilting, burnt tips, etc. lightly prune during hot spells. This will let the old growth weather the conditions until a more favourable conditions for soft, new growth comes to pass in late summer.

FEED YOUR PLANTS

The plants in your garden are far more resilient when they are healthy. Liquid, seaweed based fertilisers are safe and are rapidly taken up by grass, pots and garden shrubs.

DON’T THROW IT IN THE GREEN BIN

Instead of picking your grass clippings up and tossing them in your green bin, consider leaving your grass catcher in the shed and letting the grass clippings lay where they fall as you mow. doing this will not only add a layer of sunscreen to your lawn but will also return precious nutrients as it decays.

These are just some of the garden secrets Squarepegs Handyman implements when working on creating the perfect outdoor area and garden for our clients.
